A printer that prints one character at a time in the sequence in which they appear in the line of text. The sequence may be taken from left to right, or it may be in alternate directions for alternate lines thus avoiding an unproductive carriage-return movement. All serial printers have an arrangement in which a print head moves parallel to the paper and along the line to be printed. The print may be formed by impacting an inked ribbon against the paper, as in the case of dot matrix printers, or by one of the nonimpact marking technologies such as inkjet or thermal printers. In some designs the productivity is increased when printing other than complete lines by arranging for the head to move at high speed when passing blank areas. The direction in which the line is to be printed is also optimized. Note that the term serial printer refers to the method of printing and not to the connection, which may be serial or parallel.

Explanation:
Otra opción, a mí me suena más «puerto serie» en España, pero ambos son correctos. Apunto mi versión a continuación:
«Antes de leer esta sección, lo más importante que debe tener en cuenta al adquirir una impresora para su uso con XXXX es que ésta debe conectarse al puerto serie».

agree  Darío: Sí, claro. En España no se usa "serial". El adjetivo "serial" indica pertenencia a una serie, no conectividad al puerto serie del ordenador. Y un serial es una obra de ficción radiofónica o un culebrón televisivo. :-DDDD

impresora serial


Explanation:
Un punto importante es que prácticamente todas las impresoras en el mercado son ahora seriales ya sea porque se conectan por medio de un puerto USB (Universal Serial Bus) o porque usan un puerto RS-232 (pocas pero existen). Desde la creación del estándar USB las impresoras paralelas (es decir con puerto tipo Centronics) se han vuelto muy escasas.

Lo que hace la impresora es imprimir de forma ordenada un caracter tras otro, eso según la RAE es seriar o "hacer algo en serie. No se trata de que la impresora sea de serie. También aparece como impresora en serie en el diccionario politécnico Atienza.
