Para complementar la información de mi colega e_cuesta, los RPM se usan en las siguientes variantes de Linux: RedHat, Fedora, SUSE, CentOS y Mandriva (entre otras).
Debian y Ubuntu por otra parte usan un formato diferente: los DEB.
