Para mí, "hardening" es hacer algo más resistente a las influencias externas. Por ejemplo, para el caso del hardware, las computadoras portátiles de los soldados de los Estados Unidos están "hardened": tienen un blindaje que las hace más duras y les permite tolerar en mayor medida las interferencias electromagnéticas y los pulsos de energía eléctrica.

Para el software, el criterio es similar: se trata de evitar que pueda responder indebidamente (hackers, virus, bugs, etc.).

Quise simplemente explicar qué era y no tengo la menor idea de cómo traducirlo. Para no dar tantas vueltas, propongo traducirlo literalmente y entre comillas. Dilo en vos alta cuatro o cinco veces y ya no te sonará tan mal.
