En USA y Europa, las normas de Seguridad y Higiene en la construccción, obligan a las empresas constructoras a utilizar protectores de seguridad en los extremos afilados, salientes o puntas de metal, para evitar que los operarios puedan herirse. Son casquetes o tapones de plástico o goma que se insertan en los extremos salientes de las varillas de metal o ferralla. En el argot del sector se les conoce como chupetes por la forma que tienen. Atendiendo a la normativa, deben ser de colores visibles; naranja o rojo. Aunqe parezca increíble, al año, se produzcen miles de accidentes en el sector de la construcción -sobretodo en edificación-en los cuales los operarios se clavan en su cuerpo las varillas de ferralla al caerse o sujetarse.
