La idea es estabilizar la carga mientras está suspendida, para que no se balancee, y eso se logra generalmente con un par de cuerdas o cables tendidos desde los extremos de la pieza a puntos separados en el suelo. Esas riendas limitan limitan el balanceo o posible giro de la pieza suspendida. Dependiendo de la superficie o peso de la carga, pueden ser cuerdas sostenidas a mano, o cables de acero manejados por un torno, cabrestante o malacate.
