English term or phrase: Put off

Contexto:

Regular intake of fish obstructs unwanted sodium and may help put off sudden cardiac arrest.

Muchas gracias :=)

retrasar/prevenir/retardar
Explanation:

put off
posponer

Explanation:
Usually when someone "puts off" something, they're postponing it until later. But in this case, hopefully the meaning of "put off" has a better meaning, such as those already suggested, of preventing rather than delaying. More context is needed for the exact meaning of the term in English.

Example sentence(s):
  • He put off fixing the roof until the weather got cooler.
