Por contraposición a lo que viene despés (2WD=two wheel drive, es decir tracción a dos ruedas).
Creo que te funciona mejor 4x4 (si es que se utiliza en Argentina). Muchos de estos vehículos cuentan con la opción de funcionar con tracción integral (4 ruedas), que se utiliza para los terrenos difíciles. En carretera, es mejor usar tracción a dos ruedas, ya que el consumo se reduce sensiblemente.
