En la universidad en la que enseño, los estudiantes siempre hablan de "sit a paper", que es lo que nosotros llamamos "presentar/tomar/hacer un examen" (es una universidad internacional, donde el programa se dicta en inglés).

Muchas gracias. Lo acabo de encontrar tb en el Cambridge. UK a set of printed questions in an exam:
Candidates must answer two questions from each paper.
The geography paper is not till next week.

Me parece que paper se refiere sólo a la habilidad de redactar, sobre todo porque se acompaña de written.

Ensayo se refiere a un trabajo escrito, pero con ciertas características especiales (propias de un ensayo).

Creo que falta un signo de puntuación. Por ejemplo:

3h written paper: 50% of final grade

Así quedaría claro que se trata de la forma de evaluar el curso: 50% de la calificación por medio de trabajo escritos (resúmenes, preguntas, etc.) y 50% el ensayo final.
