English term or phrase: threads of night
The young woman woke her husband and told him that her father had brought night into the world. But night did not end.  One morning, The water serpent's daughter remembered her Father's warning.  She took one strand of her hair and knowing things that only she could know, she gathered up all the threads of night with that single strand of hair.

This is a tale from Brazil. Do anyone know the meaning of threads of night here? Thank you very much!! :)

cuentas de la noche

Explanation:

Explanation:
Odd, I thought I posted this earlier.
Technically the hebras (strands) add up to the "hilos", both of which can be interpreted as threads. But since we´re in a literary context, I wd be just as inclined to go for the more attractive words suggested by the first two contributors. And Nicolás' take is also very tempting.
