Lo primordial es que se trata de creditos universitarios.
Ni siquiera el "semester" en ingles consta de 6 meses. El semestre de otono, por dar un ejemplo, empieza generalmente en setiembre y termina en diciembre. En los paises de habla hispana se usa con frecuencia la palabra trimestre, que es mucho mas exacta con respecto al tiempo de estudio.
Pero aqui lo esencial es saber que se trata de cursos universitarios, asi que seria mejor dejar de lado lo de semestre o trimestre y traducir/transferir el mensaje de fondo.
Es mas, si se trata de la descripcion de un curso en un catalogo universitario, no hay necesidad ni siquiera de incluir "universitarios". "SPAN 1311, espanol para principiantes, 3 creditos" basta y sobra
