Sandwich PLacement Years
What is a “sandwich placement” year?
A sandwich placement is one year of a four year course where the student is either working within their chosen setting or studying at another institution (or a mixture of both). It gives students the opportunity to gain real experience, try working in their chosen field, earn money (for working paid placements Aston students can expect to earn anything from £12,500 upwards) and to develop their employability skills. Placements can be both within the UK or overseas.

Why should students do a placement?
It is recognised that graduates with placement experience will, on average, go on to higher paying jobs than those who have not undertaken a placement year and often find graduate jobs more quickly than those who have not done a placement. This is because they have recognised relevant work experience that employers value. They also are more likely to get a better final degree classification as their studies can draw on their practical experience.

Undertaking a placement as part of a course gives a student many benefits. It helps to develop their skills both personally and professionally, enabling them to put into practice the subjects they have been studying. It will help them to develop self confidence, communication and presentation skills, which all help to make students more employable.

Will students be supported to find a placement?
At Aston we pride ourselves on the support we offer to students throughout their time with us and the placement year is no different. Students can get advice on CV and application writing, interview techniques plus much more whilst they are searching for a placement. Each School (ie Aston Business School, School of Engineering and Applied Science etc) has support staff to help the students with all aspects of a placement (including support for the student whilst they are on placement). This is in addition to the wide range of resources available to all students within the Careers Service.
