Records, however, are not a panacea. The are no more than a means by which a busy teacher can take hold of a squirming, slippery, smiling, screeching, intriguing, and bewildering child and hold him still long enough to examine him carefully. This procedure, taking on-the-spot records of behavior as it is occurring, we call, for want of a better name, the *on-the-spot running record*
