English term or phrase: tutor
While I realize that it is possible to translate this word as tutor to refer to a private instructor, in the Real Academia Española dictionary, it is the fifth meaning. In my own experience, I have heard tutor used much more frequently in the legal sense 'padre o tutor'. I want to make absolutely sure that parents reading the term know what I am referring to. Many of the parents who will read it have low reading and academic levels. Thanks for your suggestions!

Tutor
Explanation:
From my own experience interpreting/translating in the educational field, 'tutor' (in Spanish) is commonly used when referring to a 'tutor' (English).

El tutor puede ser un maestro, pero en algunas ocasiones puede hasta ser otro estudiante prestando tutoría a otros estudiantes.

Sometimes the tutor (tutor in Spanish) is a teacher, but sometimes it could even be another student tutoring other students.

Explanation:
I am also a tutor to ESL children. When I use this term, the parents understand what I mean.

A tutor essentially is a teacher, just in a somewhat different capacity than a regular classroom teacher.

maestro particular / profesor particular

Explanation:
The term 'tutor' in Spanish, refers to guardian as a general rule. If you mean 'tutor' from an academic / pedagogical point of view, the term in Spanish would be 'maestro particular' o 'profesor particular'. Tutor, in Spanish comes from the word 'tutela', equivalent to the english term 'guardianship'.

--------------------------------------------------

According to the RAE, the term 'tutor' refers to guardian, regardless of the kind of Spanish. In any case, I would use the term 'maestro particular', which is clear and leaves no doubt of its meanin, in any kind of Spanish.

Example sentence(s):
  • "El alumno cuenta con un profesor particular que lo ayuda en matemáticas y ciencias naturales".
  • "Ha mejorado su rendimiento en la escuela tomando clases después de hora con un maestro particular".
