Education / Pedagogy / smaller learning communities--high school | | English term or phrase: elective focus | The State Board of Education’s High School Policy requires that all students beginning with the 9th grade class of 2009-2010, graduate with a FOCUSED PROGRAM OF STUDY preparing them for postsecondary study. Students will complete an ELECTIVE FOCUS of no less than three credits in an approved pathway.
This will be accomplished through our redesign model-Smaller Learning Communities. Smaller Learning Communities take on designs in our city: Academies, Magnet Schools, and Alternative Learning Centers. All three designs embrace the Smaller Learning Community philosophy. Academies will offer students different focused programs of study from which to choose. The academies and programs of study will differ at each school. An example of an academy is the Engineering Academy which could offer programs of study in engineering technology, science, and math. |
