English term or phrase: reach school
Definition from Education.com, Inc.:
A reach or dream school is a highly desirable school, where many applicants have similar qualifications, but not all students can be offered admission. It is highly possible the student may not be accepted for admission, as the competition for spots in the class is fierce.

Example sentence(s):
  • Reach schools are long-shots, but they should still be possible. The Online Review
  • A reach school is one where an applicant would usually face a remote chance of getting accepted. The College Solution Blog
  • A school that used to accept 50% of applicants may now accept only 30%. As a result, many schools that would have been a match a few years ago are suddenly reach schools. About.com

universidad con requisitos de admisión superiores a mi perfil académico
Definition:
I have a 3.5 GPA, so John's Hopkins with a requirement of a minimum GPA of 3.8 for admission is my "reach" school.

A "match school" or "safety" is a school in which the minimum admission requirements are equal to the applicant's qualifications (GPA, class rank, etc). A school which the applicant will have no problem in being accepted.

A "reach school" is a school whose minimum requirements for admission are slightly above the applicant's qualifications.

This has nothing to do with the caliber of the school, as there are schools whose minimum requirements may be 2.0GPA, and the applicant with a 1.5 GPA would consider this school as his/her "reach". The top tier schools (Yale, Harvard, Princeton, John's Hopkins, etc) have higher admission requirements than the middle tier or lower tier schools.

"Vía al rendimiento escolar a través de la elección" de la escuela.

Definition from own experience or research:
Road to Educational Achievement through Choice = REACH [se forma con la inicial de las 4 palabras principales]

REACH significa: "Vía al rendimiento escolar a través de la elección" de la escuela.

Reach schools son escuelas que defienden el derecho de los padres de escoger la escuela que desean para sus hijos sin tener que depender del ingreso que reciben.

Universidad de alto rendimiento académico

Definition from http://collegeapps.about.com/od/glossary:
1. A reach school is one where your academic credentials fall below the school’s range for the average freshman. Reach schools are long-shots, but they should still be possible. If you have a 2.0 GPA, Harvard is not a reach school—it’s a dream.

Other source:http://www.princetonreview.com/college/match-reach-safety.as...
A reach school is a college that you have a chance of getting into, but your test scores, class rank and / or high school grades are a bit on the low side when you look at the school's profile. The top U.S. colleges and top universities should always be considered reach schools, for the admissions standards are so high that not even perfect SAT scores guarantee acceptance.

Example sentence(s):
  • Does anyone actually get accepted to their "reach" schools? - college confidential
  • Most of my dream schools are reach schools - My SATs are just under 2100 and I have a few B's on my transcripts, and I'm applying to a couple of Ivy/very prestigious schools. If I made it in, I'd love to attend, but on the other hand, I don't want to struggle with every class. For those who've made it into their ultra-reaches (or for those who know people who have), is it usually a big problem? - college confidential
  • Rank my reach schools in their difficulty of being accepted 1. MIT 2. Cornell 3. Stanford 4. Caltech 5. Berkeley 6. Harvey Mudd 7. Carnegie Mellon I consider all of those schools my "reach" ones. Please rank them 1st being the most difficult to get accepted and 7th being the easiest. - college confidential

Explanation:
