English term or phrase: 1: In the beginning it was difficult getting used to 2: The blouse is missing...
I am unsure about whether to use Imperfecto or indefinido here:
In the beginning it was difficult getting used to - En principio era difiil or en principio fue dificil

The other question is the use of the verb faltar:

The blouse is missing buttons - la camisa no tiene botones or la camisa faltan botones (is possible to use faltar here, or can that verb only refer to persons/animals)

Thank you very much for your kind help.

fue / le faltan
Explanation:
In the first case, I would say "Al principio, nos fue difícil acostumbrarnos a..." or "Al principio, fue difícil acostumbrarse a..."

In the second case, I would say "A la blusa le faltan botones". If you say "La blusa no tiene botones", you mean it has no buttons at all.

Cheers
