I believe the origin of the term was to jump entering college freshmen ahead of the basic-level courses so that they would be \"placed\" at a higher level in a particular field of studies. However, many students now use these classes to fulfill university general education requirements and may never take another course in their AP area. Thus I think nowadays it might be better to de-emphasize the term \"placement\" (colocacion), although Oso\'s translation is literally and historically correct.
