CLEP stands for College Level Entrance Exam
An AP course is a university-level course offered in high school. Upon finishiing the course, students take a standardized test and are scored on a 5 point scale. Some colleges / universities will give university credit for the course if students score a 3 or above; others, a 4 or above; a few, only 5; and an even more select group, no credit.
The CLEP exam is taken by students with two objectives: to get university credit and also help place the student at the right level when entering college / university.

The most useful answerer, to put it that way, was Dawn39 because of her many comments. I agree with her tht "colocación" sounds artifical, albeit it used here in the US. Likewise, "college" has to be "universidad" for me since "colegio" or "college" being its cognate, sounds like high school. Finally, although the reasoning and logic Dawn39 gave was the most valuable component, the change pandem made to "prueba" instead of "examen" I like more
