Explanation:
en los primeros días de los Estados Unidos (de Norte América)

The fist one is the one in my view. When translating into Spanish you have to be careful because many people sort of take offence at the fact that America is the USA, since Latin Americans are Americans too. Personally, I thing it is a question of having included the term America in the denomination of a country. But not everyone sees it that way. Hope this is useful for you.

agree  Daniel Cincunegui: I think "primeros días" is best. I also agree with your view: the US was simply the first independent country that used the word, by at least 30 years. It's only natural the usage would come to refer to that country.

Teniendo en cuenta los comentarios de los colegas, \"America Colonial\" sería una buena opción y sería bastante amplio, no importa si es norte America o Central, etc.
If you go the link above, you will see it refers only to colonies in North America and the time is long after Columbus.
