“Grounding” a child for a month leaves you with little positive or negative leverage for the next four weeks, and most parents rarely “stick-to” these extreme punishments, thus giving the child the message that they don’t mean what they say. Don’t threaten a consequence that you cannot fulfill. And be sure the severity of the consequence fits the seriousness of the misbehavior.
