Social Sciences - Education / Pedagogy / Education
English term or phrase: literacy
This is a pamphlet put out by a school district, talking about how scores on some standardized tests increased in all areas ("Literacy, Math, Science").

I'm editing it. The translator had put "lenguaje". My first inclination was to put "lengua" ... but this says "literacy" -- literally "alfabetismo", but it's not really that, either.

Suggestions?

Lengua
Explanation:
Es una opción... Como área de estudio yo pondría Lengua ( viene a ser lo mismo que Lenguaje).
También podría ponerse Literatura, pero esto es más específico.

lecto-escritura

Explanation:
In teaching this is the "technical term" to refer to the ad¡cquisition of the capacity to read and write -more than "lengua" that refers to the study of Spanish as the subject matter (from the point of view of semantics, syntax, morphology, etc)

Explanation:
En Uruguay, la clase en que se enseña "reading and writing" es "Idioma Español", por lo que yo lo dejaría como "lenguaje" o lo cambiaría a "idioma", o, si se está hablando específicamente de las habilidades en usar el idioma inglés, lo cambiaría a "Inglés".

Lenguaje

Explanation:
'Lenguaje' is the preferred term as it encompasses everything meant by 'Literacy' in grade school.

--------------------------------------------------

I must add that, in grade school, \'lenguaje\' teaches children to use language, as opposed to \'lengua\', which teaches them about language in more advanced years.

lectura y escritura /redacción ( read explanation)

Explanation:
Eventhough the meaning of literacy is "alfabetización", taking into acount the offering in the pamphlet (standarized tests) my suggestion is "lectura y escritua". "Lenguaje" suggests syntactic analysis, word order, etc. as well, which are rearly tested in basic standarized tests.
Good luck!

Well....I´ve found that in USA \"literacy\" ( family literacy - youth, adult literacy) means \"INSTRUCCIÓN\". Anyway that´s not the meaning in the context provided. See
http://ncal.literacy.upenn.edu/
www.nifl.gov
I´m still considering the option provided by Rene - lenguaje -, but I´m not sure....
