(2) DUTY SYSTEMS

There are three principal duty systems:




(a) Shift system


Under this system each period of 24 hours shall be divided into a day shift and a night shift. The day and night shifts shall be so arranged that over a fixed number of weeks the weekly hours of duty performed by each member average 42. A rota giving effect to the foregoing shall be drawn up. The general principles governing the rota shall be as follow:


(i)
The night shift shall not be less than 12 hours;


(ii)
There shall be at least two complete periods of 24 hours freedom from duty each week, ie two days off duty;




(iii)
Each member's leave days shall change week by week in a regular progressive manner;




(iv)
The shift rota shall be so designed as to provide as nearly as possible that the number of firefighters normally available for duty from time to time is constant.





(v)
No rota system shall include continuous duty periods of 24 hours.
