Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) - Means of calculating the linguistic activity or proficiency of young children.This is worked out in exactly the way one would suspect: that is, by adding up the total number of words spoken by the child and dividing by the number of times that the child has spoken. The lowest possible MLU is thus 1. Bishop and Adams (1990) found that MLU at the age of 4.5 years was a good guide to the same child's literacy at the age of 8 years.
