I guess it must be like a "periodo de prueba", but "double"?? Is that because it's the second time that he's been told off?

Explanation:
creo que el "double" es eso mismo. Se supone aquí que hubo una decepción en las oportunidades anteriores, entonces habrá una oportunidad más pero la vigilancia sobre esa persona se ejercerá doblemente, o sea será dos veces más intensa.

Another option: estar a prueba (to be on probation -Collins Dcitionary; context: employment or school).

In school terms, might it mean double detention???
in which case, it would be "quedarse castigado por segunda vez" but it doesn´t ring true.
