I'm having trouble with a whole phrase in between * *:
The French and American Revolutions inspired many Europeans to think of themselves as individuals with individual rights, including the right to self-government. El párrafo que te preocupa quiere decir que las personas sienten cercanía con aquellos que comparten su mismo anhelo de autonomía, además de costumbres, idioma, etc. más que con quienes los gobiernan, cuyos intereses van muchas veces por un camino distinto, alejado de dicha necesidad de autonomía.
La vieja historia del mundo, supongo...

Si me lo permites, yo puliría un poco eso de \"la raíz común del gobierno propio\". Para mi se trata de una causa común, de un anhelo compartido, como ya lo menciono más arriba. Dejo a tu criterio la mejor manera de armar la frase.
