El problema con decir "autónomo" o "independiente" es que no necesariamente un "standalone DVD player" lo es. Estos aparatos funcionan exclusivamente conectados a un computador o a un sistema de audio, por lo tanto no son realmente independientes. La idea de llamarles "standalone" es diferenciarlos de los que van ensamblados al computador o sistema de audio y por lo tanto "cannot stand alone".

En honor a la verdad debiera llamárseles "reproductor de DVD periférico" puesto que son "periféricos" al igual que la impresora, el monitor, el mouse, el teclado, el pendrive, el disco duro "externo", etc.
