El "watchdog" es un circuito contador que periódicamente se reinicia a cero con una señal que indica "todo OK", enviada por algún otro componente del sistema. Si esta señal de reinicio no es recibida, el "watchdog" supone que el resto del sistema se colgó y luego, transcurrido cierto tiempo, emite un pulso de reinicio al resto de las unidades (es decir, a falta de indicios de actividad, supone que hay que reiniciar).
