Before starting the motor with compound excitation, that has four terminals for the armature circuit, check that also the direction of the excitation be concordant.
For this easy test, before connecting the excitation, the motor is started by applying a short voltage pulse to the armature circuit, on the two free terminals, the other two are linked by bridge, taking into account the direction of rotation of the motor.
