English to Spanish translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Engineering (general) / straw
English term or phrase: straw
Hola a todos,
estoy traduciendo una manual que explica el funcionamiento de un secador con un sistema de vapor y condensación.
Hay una oración en la que figura straw y que me está causando mucho dolor de cabeza.

The system also controls the blow-through steam straw velocity.

Si alguien me pudiera ayudar se lo agradecería muchísimo.
Saludos y muchas gracias

I thought the same thing, that it was a text written by a non-native or a translation into English, using uncommon terms.
I did not find any sites with steam straw velocity or for that matter, straw velocity. I did find twice as many sites referring to steam rate that to steam velocity. However, straw also means spread, distribute, cover. It is though, obsolete. Given my first comment, I opted for that meaning, which seemed to have sense, given the whole sentence. But now we know the truth :) it has to do with a syphon / siphon.

pajilla

Explanation:
Thre's almost certainly an error of word order in the source text. It should read:

" ... the straw blow-through steam velocity."

or, in plain English:

" ... the velocity of the blow-through steam that activates the straw."

The text seems to be describing the suction effect that occurs when steam (or a gas) passes rapidly across the top of a vertical tube the bottom of which stands in a liquid - i.e. liquid rises up the tube. (Effect used in non-aerosol spayers for household cleaning products, etc.)

By analogy with drinking straws, you could translate literally: 'pajilla'.

Technically, it's not a syphon, although many web-texts do refer to it as a syphon:

Champion rebuilds dryer steam controls to improve Lufkin machine ...- [ Traduzca esta página ]These curves show that the amount of blow-through steam carrying the condensate through the oversize syphons was very large at any reasonable DP, ...
