Son mercados regulados en donde no se negocian las existencias físicas de un producto determinado, sino que se compran y se venden los contratos a futuro.

Por ejemplo: petróleo, café, cacao, maíz, etc.

moken: ¡Hola compañero de armas! De todos modos Yaotl, creo que nunca es tarde por lo menos para poder editar el glosario para consultas futuras. Yo trabajé 13 años en estos mercados y te puedo decir con total seguridad que futuros y fwds son cosas diferentes.

Mercado de futuros

Explanation:
Un mercado de futuros es donde se compran y venden contratos para el envío de commodities o instrumentos en fecha futura. Los contratos de futuros son acuerdos por los cuales las partes intervinientes en los mismos se obligan a la compra o venta de un número determinado de bienes o títulos a un precio y en una fecha futura estipulados de antemano en el contrato.

Los futuros cubren riesgos sobre variaciones en el tiempo y aseguran la provisión de bienes y servicios con anterioridad. El acuerdo estandarizado en el que una de las partes se compromete a comprar (en el caso del comprador del contrato) y la otra a vender (en el caso del vendedor del mismo) en una fecha futura y a un precio prefijado genera una obligación legal que debe ser respetada a través del tiempo.

En mi opinión, la frase se refiere a los mercados a plazo en general (es decir, englobando a los de futuros, opciones, forwards y derivados en general), en contraposición a los mercados al contado.

Yo lo traduciría como "... para vender en los mercados al contado, a plazo, primarios y secundarios.

María Diehn: A pesar de que no encaja con mi estilo habitual de traducir siempre, este caso es especial, pues, como verá en la respuesta que me ví obligada a publicar por falta de espacio aquí, la "otra" opción se adueñó del mercado. Eso sí: con comillas o versales.

Es muy cierto que se usa, que aparece en muchísimos glosarios y diccionarios, incluso en el que cito, como traducción de "forward market", la expresión "mercado de futuros".
La traducción que usted haga, entonces puede acogerse a esa forma generalizada de traducirla, si no es muy técnica y si no tiene en cuenta la diferencia existente, desde el punto de vista de la evolución de los mercados derivativos, entre el mercado "forward" y el mercado de futuros. Una diferencia básica entre ambos,según el documento que cito, es la "estandarización" (la normalización) de los segundos.
A continuación, algunos textos ilustrativos. En priemr lugar, definiciones tomadas de la primera fuente que cito abajo. Luego, algunos apartes muy claros sobre esas diferencias, tomados de la segunda fuente que cito abajo.

Forward Contract Sometimes used as synonym for "forward deal" or "future". More specifically for arrangements with the same effect as a forward deal between a bank and a customer.

1) Forward Cover Taking Forward contracts to protect against movements in the exchange rate.

Forward Deal A deal with a value date greater than the spot value date.

Forward Forward A forward / forward deal is one where both legs of the deal have value dates greater than the current spot value date.

Forward Margins Discounts or premiums between spot rate and the forward rate for a currency. Normally quoted in points.

Forward Maturities Trading days on which days contracts can be transacted later than the spot date.

2) "The writing of this paper about the economic history of BMSP had four objectives in view: (1)the exam of the process of development of futures contracts for commodities in developing countries, and the role of forward contracts; [...]

The economic history of commodities exchanges in countries like United States, Japan and Holland shows that there is a long time span in the institutional process of derivatives market creation. There is a long time interval between the beginning of the spot market, which in general is followed by the development of a forward market, and ends up by the creation of a futures (and options) market. In these countries, the long institutional process of the consolidation of the exchanges was done in tandem with the development of other chain links of the agribusiness object of futures operations [...]

The system of forward contracts continued to develop and evolve, and gradually transformed into futures contracts, in a process that lasted about fifty years. "A **futures contract** is a standard agreement between two parties, that obliges one party to sell and the other to buy a certain quantity and quality of cotton at a given price, at or before a certain date in the future.
The key word is standardization. All the conditions under which the cotton will be transferred from seller to buyer are established by the exchange before the transaction begins. The only thing left for the parties to trade and fix is the future price. Exchanges, in general, follow basic rules about margins of guarantee and daily adjustments of payment settlements for the contracts, [...]"
