Yo diría que "overbank" se refiere a la tierra perteneciente a las riberas y bancos de los ríos y más allá; lo que se podría inundar en caso de crecida; la vega del río, no el fondo: en inglés, "floodplain".

agree  Charles Davis: Coincido totalmente con tu interpretación. ¿Tal vez "de la llanura aluvial/de inundación"? Pero creo que "vega" es correcto. "Basin" es la cuenca del río, no su lecho.
