English term or phrase: Point spread bets
"For straight bets, also known as point spread bets, one team is favored by a certain number of points. This number is determined by each bookmaker (“bookie”) individually, but it is quite common to simply use the point spreads from Las Vegas. If the Buffalo Bills are favored over the New York Giants by five points, “-5” will appear next to their name on the board. If you bet on the Bills, they must win by six or more points in order for you to get paid. If you bet on the Giants, you get paid if they win, but you will also get paid if they lose by four or less points. This second outcome is called “beating the spread.” With straight bets you usually have to lay eleven dollars in order to win ten, or any bet using this proportion (e.g. laying $55 in order to win $50.) The extra ten percent on your bet goes to the bookie. If the Bills win by exactly five points in the above example, it’s a “push” and your bet would be returned minus the bookie’s percentage."
