English term or phrase:Simple daylighted wedge and plane-shear displacement geometries
Given the complexity of slope displacement, no single mathematical relationship is sufficient for predicting slope behavior. On the basis of an examination of slope instability and displacement records, Zavodni and Broadbent have postulated two displacement stages: (1) a regressive stage, during which the slope will restabilize if some external disturbance is removed, and (2) a progressive stage, where the slope displacement will progress to the point of total collapse unless active control measures are taken.
A progressive displacement requires the following conditions, as shown on Figure 5:
1. The displacing mass is free to move.
2. The total driving force does not decrease with displacement.
3. The shear strength drops with displacement (peak shear strength being greater than residual shear strength).
***Simple daylighted wedge and plane-shear displacement geometries*** would be examples of potential progressive displacements.
Where the stress/strain curve shows no peak shear strength and the driving force is close to the residual, the displacement would be steady-state.
