"A pesar de sus escasas probabilidades de ganar, Howard Dean recaudó..."

Long-shot Howard Dean raised $45 million in ’04 by striking a chord.

PD: Encontré el significado de esta manera pero no s´s si es correcto. In politics, a long-shot is a candidate with little chance of winning.
