English term or phrase: brazen grab

Hello, I've come across the expression "brazen grab" in the following context. I'm
not sure how it could be translated into Spanish ... Any suggestions would be
welcome, thanks..

The desire to avoid looking partisan was taken to extraordinary heights,
with Mr Brown making a brazen grab for one policy long championed by the
Conservatives

Perhaps a native speaker can express this better. The idea is that in a rather shameless and obvious way he adopts a policy of the other party in order to appear non-partisan.

sorry, it's "long defended": "defendida durante mucho tiempo por los conservadores"
