agree  Pablo Grosschmid: también podría usarse el verbo engrandecer en reflexivo "para engrandecerse" (la intención inicial también fue robar !)

  -> precisamente puse lo de influencia porque lo de Cuba es bien distinto de lo de México en el siglo XIX, que se trató de un robo de territorio; en Cuba no buscan agrandarse sino mantener o expandir su influencia
