fueron expulsados en el momento más cruel del invierno


Explanation:
Si bien una traducción literal de la expresión "In the dead of winter", es la mitad del invierno pienso que una traducción, libre sí, pero posible (ya que buscas una "forma literaria") es la que señalo arriba: esas personas no solamente fueron expulsadas sino que lo fueron en el momento más oscuro y frío del invierno.
