para mi es un juego de palabras con el idiom "where there's smoke, there's fire" . como dices que el artículo trata de que la genética está vinculada con el hábito, cualquiera de estos idioms en español transmite esa idea, y dos de ellos mantienen la imagen del humo. suerte!

Explanation:
Una solución es "lo que hace humo es porque está ardiendo". Ésta encaja con el tema, que es fumar. Por lo tanto, yo lo dejaría así, porque así está en el título, no hace explícito todo el dicho. Además, la relación causa-efecto entre humo y fuego es muy clara.
Otra forma de decirlo es "cuando el río suena, agua lleva", pero se perdería la relación del humo con el tema de fumar.
