I included the wrong definitions and gave no examples. Now that this has been remedied, I will wait at least 48 hours. Obviously, since the two meanings that are of interest are "curry favor" and "go bankrupt", the answers "panza arriba" and "bocarriba/de espaldas" are not appropriate in this context. They are right, just no appropriate here, which is my fault. Sorry.
The other two answers, through right, are neutral in register - I was hoping for something as informal as "belly up".
In addition, if translations could be added for "curry favor from", that would be great. Please try to do so in the informal register also.
I liked Tweedy less after reading the book, which strikes me as odd if Kot was trying to belly-up to him. He plays the sympathy card near the end (the migraines, the drugs) but mostly, he seems like a guy with poor social skills and immense talent, but who also likes to be the most talented person in the room. Being challenged (by Jay Bennett, for instance) seems to push him away. It'll be interesting to see how long his friendship with O'Rourke lasts...
