I think "the pub" is not quite literal, more like "to rub shouders with, socially" (codear, or other suggestions in the thread in the link).
When they say "avoid the pub" I think it means "we try not to bump into them in the pub because the setting there is too informal". It's not a case of inviting them to the pub, but going and finding them there.
