Una amiga me ha preguntado cómo traducir el título de un libro de Annie Proulx - 'That Old Ace in the Hole'. No he leído el libro y la verdad es que no había oído nunca la expresión 'ace in the hole'. He buscado a Google y he encontrado la siguiente explicación:

In certain games of poker, some cards are dealt such that they are not visible to the other players, and the slang expression for these cards is called "the hole". Having an "ace" (a high card) in "the hole" can provide one with a decisive advantage when the cards are finally revealed.

En forma figurativa también describe "someone or something important that is kept as a surprise until the right time so as to bring victory and success" (A Dictionary of American Idioms, Adam Makkai, et al). Con base en esta definición es mi sugerencia.

Sin embargo, de un primer vistazo, podría argumentarse que mi sugerencia traduce otra expresión en inglés: "to have a card up one's sleeve". No obstante, lo que esta frase quiere decir en inglés es que se cuenta con un plan alternativo; no el sorpresivo as bajo la manga que te ayudará a ganar la partida, sino sencillamente otra forma de lograr algo. Pero vamos a ver qué te dicen otros colegas. ¡Saludos!

similar to "play a trump card" another possibility could be "secret weapon". the only problem with "card up your sleeve" could be that it might imply cheating
