El fuego se propagó porque los fuertes vientos transportaron las brasas por delante de las llamas en sí, y al caer provocaron los llamados "spot fires," numerosos focos de incendio más pequeños. Lo que lovió no eran llamas, ni el fuego, sino las brasas.
