Most would say carta de crédito stand by. The growing use of anglicisms is endangering the Spanish language. A stand by letter of credit can also be held to warrant the compliance of the buyer in a number of transactions, which supports the idea that it is held in reserve for when the situation arises, such as noncompliance by the importer.
