Para "work agreements", "purchase agreements" o cuestiones
comerciales, utilizaría "contrato". Por ej. contrato de trabajo,
contrato de compra-venta, etc.

Para programas sin ánimo de lucro, proyectos entre universidades, gobiernos, ONGs, etc., utilizaría "acuerdo" o incluso "convenio". Por ej. "acuerdo" de cooperación, "acuerdo de colaboración", etc.

Creo que "convenio" es la traducción de "covenant". No sé exactamente cuál sea la diferencia entre un "covenant", un "agreement" y un "contract".

Veamos qué dicen los demás.

Explanation:
This is just my personal opinion, with no reference to back it up, but the way I see it, an Agreement (Acuerdo) is usually a private document and is not necessarily legally binding, whereas a Contract (Contrato) is usually a public document and IS legally binding, specifying specific obligations penalties, while a Covenant (Convenio) is a solemn and [i]morally[/i] binding agreement usually made between nations, more often than than between people or companies.

From another point of view, an agreement simply states concordance of opinion between two or more parties, while a contract introduces specific legally binding obligations and penalties.

In other words, a purchase AGREEMENT can probably be broken without any legal consequences, whereas breaking a purchase CONTRACT would probably imply legal consequences.

I'm not a lawyer, and the terms are plenty vague in any case, but I think in general this is the way these terms are used commonly today, in both English and Spanish.

But that's just my opinion. Your mileage may vary...

Aquí tienes algunas entradas que la Real Academia Española da para los tres términos:

CONTRATO
1. m. Pacto o convenio, oral o escrito, entre partes que se obligan sobre materia o cosa determinada, y a cuyo cumplimiento pueden ser compelidas.
2. m. Documento que recoge las condiciones de este convenio.

ACUERDO
1. m. Resolución que se toma en los tribunales, sociedades, comunidades u órganos colegiados.
2. m. Resolución premeditada de una sola persona o de varias.
3. m. Convenio entre dos o más partes.

CONVENIO
1. m. Ajuste, convención, contrato.
~ colectivo.
1. m. Acuerdo vinculante entre los representantes de los trabajadores y los empresarios de un sector o empresa determinados, que regula las condiciones laborales.

Parece que la diferencia entre ellos no es clara y tendrás que decidir el término según el contexto. Así, hablamos de un "convenio empresarial", un "acuerdo judicial" , un "contrato laboral", etc.

agree  Mariela Malanij: En Argentina tienes un "contrato de alquiler" y un "convenio de desocupación". Generalmente, acuerdo se reserva + para hablar de entendimiento, pero el nombre de los docs suele ser Contrato/Convenio.

En mi experiencia, los acuerdos a veces no involucran dinero, como ser un acuerdo de colaboración entre dos instituciones.
Sin embargo, ante la duda, consulté a un abogado con 50 años de experiencia quien me reconfirmó que son todos sinónimos, que no hay diferencia ni de partes ni de objeto.
Después cada uno elige.
