En la Argentina existe también la \"unión civil\" que se formaliza de manera similar a un matrimonio pero que no conlleva los mismos derechos que el matrimonio en sí (por ej.: derechos hereditarios). Fue una alternativa para las uniones de parejas gay ante la oposición al matrimonio gay por parte de muchos sectores de la sociedad, pero también hay parejas heterosexuales que optan por la union civil en vez del matrimonio.

En Perú se usa el término "conviviente" incluso en textos legales, documentos oficiales, formatos de salud pública, etc. Se supone que implica una convivencia, una vida en común como pareja (heterosexual u homosexual). "Concubino" suena demasiado duro, y "compañero" es más relativo a amistades, o a relaciones de trabajo.
