Maria A Perez: Pues sí, la cita parece estar sacada de este libro. Si es así, la palabra en inglés es "failings", que también se podría traducir como "puntos débiles".

Railings es “barandilla, pasamanos”. Existe la expresión rail against que significa “criticar, quejarse, protestar”. Pero en este contexto, y si no se trata de una errata, su uso tiene que ser metafórico. Por eso pienso que podría traducirse como "obstáculos", "impedimentos"o "inconvenientes".
