Creo que "explorar" es la más apropiada en este caso, imagino que es una especie de "tacto" (exploración, con las yemas de los dedos, de una superficie orgánica o de una cavidad accesible) para averiguar si vienen más crías..."Auscultar" es por fuera, por lo que no me termina de convencer.
