Sin saber más, yo diría que es probable que se trate de una errata (probablemente corregida por el corrector automático de Word) y en realidad sea "alkaline earth elements" > "elementos alcalinotérreos"

Asker: Claro! esto es lo que dice: Examples of materials which have been reported as being effective for improving the water-resistant properties...are the following: poly(vinyl alcohol), with or without a minor amount of poly(vinyl acetate); metallic resinates (...) acrylics, and a wax-asphalt emulsion with or without such materials as potassium sulfate, alkali and alkaline earth eliminates.
