English term or phrase: y-intercepts and slopes
Drawing on our work with elementary and middle school teachers, we note that figural generalizers have a more meaningful understanding of the numerical strategies they construct, and that numerical generalizers are oftentimes unable to see patterns and justify their formulas. Further, the ones who are adept at figural generalization could see through invariant properties, relations, or attributes visually, and they could explain the significance of y-intercepts and slopes as rates of change in concrete, tangible terms.
