Main block has multiple pulleys or “sheaves”.
Block can be reeved multiple times with main line to lift maximum capacity.
Reeving the cable through the sheaves increases the picking strength of the cable, having a multiplier-like effect.
Logically, a four-part line, or a line reeved through two sheaves at the head of the boom and two sheaves on the main block, will have more strength than a single line, such as the whip line.
Notice the head of this crane boom. It has the ability for multi-part reeving and extends capacity. he main block line should have a corresponding number of sheaves if it is to be rigged to the maximum
